2018 is the year of 'Afrofuturism'.
'Black Panther' is not the only movie that marries African culture with technology, just ask director, CJ Obasi.
The new film that he just directed combines African culture, technology and mixes it in a large pot of mysticism.
Titled 'Hello Rain', the movie is an adaptation of a short story by Nigerian American professor and fantasy writer, Nnedi Okorafor titled 'Hello Moto'
Nnedi also wrote the 'Long Live The King' issue of the Black Panther comics.
Set in Lagos, the short film is about a scientist/witch who combines witchcraft and technology to create wigs which grant her and her friends supernatural powers.
But when their powers grow uncontrollably, she must stop them by any means.
The movie provides social commentary on the definition of female beauty in a male dominated world using contemporary science fiction to paint the story.
The movie will have its World Premiere at the 64th International Short Film Festival, Oberhausen (Kurzfilmtage, Oberhausen).
The Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen is the oldest short film festival in the world, and receives over 5000 entries from 90 countries annually.
CJ Obasi who spoke to Bounce News shared his joy on this milestone for this film.
"Its great to have been selected for such a festival, and also selected in the International Competition category.
"The festival will be good because it could bring more business, and give us more exposure. At the festival, the film will get the right kind of criticism, that would help us improve,by the time we are making the next film"
Apart from 'Kajola' done by film maker Niyi Akinmolayan many years ago, the sci-fi and fantasy genres have not really been tackled in Nollywood, but CJ Obasi wants to change it.
"The genre I have intrest in is horror and augumented reality, so definitely, I plan on making a feature film that contains these elements"
He directed the horror laced flick "Ojuju" so with this director anything is possible.
"We are still making arrangements for the movie to be eventually screened in Nigeria"
